Mineral Insulated (MI) Band Heaters
The MI band heater from Watlow is a high performance heater. The band heater's performance and name are derived from Watlow's exclusive mineral insulation - a material with much higher thermal conductivity than mica and hard ceramic insulators used in conventional heaters.

A thin layer of the "high" thermal conductive MI material is used to electrically insulate the element wire from the inside diameter of the heather sheath. A thicker "low" thermal conductivity layer backs up the element wire directing the heat inward towards the part being heated.

The result is more efficient heat transfer, which lowers element wire temperatures and increases band heater life.

Watlow’s MI Band heaters are made with our exclusive mineral insulation—a material that has much higher thermal conductivity than the mica and hard ceramic insulators used in conventional heaters. The result is more efficient heat transfer ... a performance solution that lowers element temperature and increases life.

Most heaters tend to absorb moisture during the off cycle, which causes unnecessary tripping of Ground Fault Indicators (GFIs). Watlow has solved this problem by designing and engineering a new style of high performance MI Bands with a moisture resistant construction called MIE (MI Euronorm).

A major manufacturer of plastics machinery has been using this MIE construction for over eight years with no GFI problems reported. Factory examination of MIE heaters after several years of field operation maintained original moisture resistance capability.
